Australian Football Hall of Fame member, Carlton legend and Brisbane Bears coach, Robert Walls, passed away aged 74.  Mr Walls battled with cancer for more than two years, and passed away after using voluntary assisted dying laws.  3AW Commentator, Bruce Eva, told Sam Leckie on Wide World of Sports, "It is a sad day. It's a sad day for the footy world. First and foremost a sad day for Wally's family." "It's a sad day for the 3AW family and the clubs that he represented so brilliantly four premierships, three as a player for Carlton, one as a Carlton coach." "But he also had such an impact on, firstly, the Fitzroy Football Club, who then obviously became the um, the Brisbane Lions. He did coached the Brisbane Bears, actually pre-merger as well, and he finished his coaching career with a couple of years in charge at the Tigers," Mr Eva said.

Game 2 of Women's State of Origin kicks off tomorrow night, with the New South Wales Blues aiming to secure the series.  However, Queensland will put up a fight.  Millie Elliot told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "It was only the first game for the year, so they'll come out a different side and yeah, you can't give them too much room and too much time because we know what they're capable of and we know what Queensland are capable of as well." "So, no complacency headed in. I'm sure the New South Wales Blues know that they felt that last year and players like Ali Brigginshaw and Taryn Aiken in the halves can't give them too much," Elliot continued. 

Team selections for State of Origin will be released on Monday, with Game 1 just two weeks away.  With Reece Walsh and Ben Hunt out with injuries, there are many discussions regarding who will fill the Maroons' spine.  Broncos five-eighth and Maroons legend, Ben Hunt, told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "Depending [on] what Billy really wants to do, you're hearing a bit of chat about maybe Munster going to fullback and things like that." "If he wants to put Munster at fullback and start Tommy in the halves, and he got KP on the bench like that's pretty handy as well," Hunt continued. 

The Dolphins have had a rocky start to 2025, recording four wins and six losses to open the season. However, the team remains confident they can finish strong. Dolphins coach, Kristian Woolf, told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "I think if you look at the course of the season, particularly from where we started, we've shown that we're improving." "You can see that we're really heading in the right direction there, and now that doesn't give you success every week." "But as long as we can see that improvement, then I know where we're going to end up," Mr Woolf continued. 

Brandon Smith has not yet played NRL in 2025, as he continues to struggle with a knee injury. However, when he does make his return, it will not be at the Roosters, instead, Smith will join the South Sydney Rabbitohs earlier than expected.  Brandon Smith told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "I'm a boy who had a dream and I've been able to live it out. But, there's still things I want to be able to achieve, and still the things I want to be able to do in this game." "I'm looking forward to that process to probably be at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, very soon. It's no secret anymore." "I want to win another premiership and with the Rabbitohs, [they were] my favourite team growing up," Smith continued.

The North Queensland Cowboys have had a rocky start to 2025, sitting 9th on the NRL ladder.  However, the Cowboys remain confident, with more than half the season left.  Cowboy Coen Hess told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "We still have the monkey on our back there for the first three weeks, but it was good." "The boys really dug deep, obviously trained the house down, and then it finally prevailed out on the field. And we're good enough to get four wins there." "We had a little hiccup at Magic Round, but, no better way to bounce back than here Saturday against Penrith," Hess continued. 

Michael Valkanis has been appointed the head coach of the Brisbane Roar after parting ways with Ruben Zadkovich.  The Roar has struggled in recent years, with game attendance at an all-time low.  Former football player and Stan commentator, Mark Bosnich, told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "The fact that the local league is not getting the crowds that it deserves points to some massive structural problem into why aren't all these kids who participate in football, who watch the European game, watch the games, were talking about why aren't they attending local games?" "And that's something that's very structural," Mr Bosnich continued.   

Rising golfer Elvis Smylie has declared he will make his debut in an American major at Quail Hollow.  Smylie had a breakout summer where he won the BMW Australian PGA Championship in 2024 and went on to contest the British Open.  Smylie told Peter Psatlis on Wide World of Sports, "It was a pretty cool feeling, and I'm really excited to bring Mum and Dad along the ride with me." "I think the success that I've had over the past year has been a byproduct of all the work that I've put in years and years ago." "The opportunity that I'll have next week it's a position that I believe I should be in and to be able to, you know, go out there and compete against some of the world's best."  "It's just it's another stepping stone for me to achieve what I wanted to in this game," Smylie continued.

With Women's State of Origin set to get underway this week, Sydney Rooster's star Millie Elliott revealed she's excited to cheer for the NSW team as she joins Nine's compensation team.

With the first game of State of Origin five weeks away, team selections are already a hot topic.  With Reece Walsh's injury, Kalyn Ponga is expected to take the fullback position, but now the spotlight turns to Tom Dearden and Daly Cherry-Evans.  Jonathan Thurston told Jason Matthews on Wide World of Sports, "If Munster and DCE are fit, then I expect Tommy Dearden to be...he could be on the bench, he could certainly be 18th man as well." "Our strongest side at the moment it's, definitely a DCE and Cameron Munster in the halves." "But there's still five weeks to go before that comes around, so a lot can happen in five weeks," JT continued. 

The Brisbane Broncos have had a steady start to the NRL season, however, the team narrowly lost to the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night.  Broncos star Patrick Carrigan told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "Plenty of positives, I think." "Probably our attitude and those sorts of things improved on the week before. And I think Madge probably was pleased with that aspect of things, but we just shot ourselves in the foot again, too many mistakes." "Seven weeks into the comp learning and building some combos, but, we've got plenty of room for improvement," Carrigan continued.

The Brisbane Lions have carried their strong form from 2024 into the 2025 season with wins in the first five rounds. The Lions face the Collingwood Magpies at the Gabba on Thursday night, aiming to keep their winning streak alive.  Brisbane Lions and AFL legend Leigh Matthews told Jason Matthews on Wide World of Sports, "I think you'd be confident that when they're on and playing at their best. I think that's the top level in the game at the moment." "They've had an unusual situation where [in] four of the five games, they've been sort of well behind at half time and then really came home hard in the second half." "So that's been a bit of a vulnerability.  But certainly they've been coming home strong here," Mr Matthews continued. 

The Wests Tigers announced that Lachlan Galvin would not be with the club beyond 2026.  Today, the club dropped Lachlan Galvin from their NRL squad, with the teen set to play in the NSW Cup.  The decision to drop Galvin has been led by senior players, Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau. Member of the Continuous Call Team, Jamie Soward, told Jason Matthews on Wide World of Sports, "I think that Benji [Marshall] would have to make a decision based on what their team needs best." "A young man has made a decision so far out to say that he doesn't want to play or doesn't see a future at the club, with these players and with the coach. I had no doubt that it was going to end in tears," Soward continued.

"I think Reece Reece Walsh is a little bit off at the moment, but there's still some time to go before Origin. If he strings a few of his best games together, he's got to be in the mix." "Kalyn Ponga [has] probably got his nose in front for mine at the moment," Mr Belcher continues.

Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa has received high praise from Immortals and is only in his third NRL season.  Katoa told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "Joey Johns and all of those, I guess, halves that have been so great in their career. I guess speak about me the way they do. I see as a bit of an honour, a bit of a privilege." "But I understand at the same time that I haven't really proved anything in the NRL so far."  "Obviously as a team in the Dolphins, we still haven't made the top eight. So that's still a goal of mine," Katoa continued. 

Craig Bellamy's future at the Melbourne Storm is uncertain after 23 seasons as head coach.  Frank Ponissi, General Manager of Football for the Melbourne Storm, told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "He's coaching as well as I've ever seen him coach. He's enjoying it, there's a good vibe in the group." "So I just see no reason why he shouldn't continue." "I think Wayne Bennett's proving age is not a barrier. He's done phenomenal things at South Sydney and he's got a few more years on Craig." "So I think that should be an inspiration for Craig to keep going," Mr Ponissi continued.

Broncos star Payne Haas has confirmed that he is weighing up a switch in his representative football allegiance from Australia to Samoa. The switch would not impact his Blues position, as Samoa is considered a tier-two nation.  NRL legend Scott Prince told Jason Matthews on Wide World of Sports, "He wants to represent his family and heritage, and to do that while his grandparents are still around, they can enjoy his football." "But more importantly, the fact that he can just sort of lead for his people and just show that you don't have to play for Australia, you can be proud of being Samoan." "It's not about the money. It's about representing his culture, his people, and more importantly, representing his family," Prince continued. 

Gold Coast local Jaylan De Groot made his debut with the Titans in 2024 and hopes to gain more game time in 2025.  Jaylan De Groot told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "Making my debut was awesome, and now playing my second game and, hopefully, a few more this year, it's really exciting." "I'm just trying to do the best I can each and every week and better my game and help the boys in every way possible to get a win," De Groot continued. 

It has been 30 years since News Corp created the Super League in hopes of rivaling the Australian Rugby League.  The creation of the Super League led to battles over television rights, player contracts, and the future of rugby league in Australia.  Former Super League CEO John Ribot told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "People have asked where our game is going, and you'd like to think that for all the disruptiveness of what was going on, definitely wasn't good for our game." "So, hopefully, the price we paid it was worth the amount of pain we went through at the time." "Now, it's just time to get on and keep building our game to be as great as what it is and keep being better and better," Mr Ribot continued. 

Last week, Australian NBA player Josh Giddey silenced the LA Lakers after his half-court shot earnt the Chicago Bulls the win.  Josh Giddey's Australian-based Manager, Jeff Van Gronigan, told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "It was the basketball shot heard around the world." "The whole sequence leading up to the half-court heave was extraordinary," Mr Van Gronigan continued. 

Gehamat Shibasaki has been the breakout player in the 2025 NRL season, winning the Battle Medal in the Broncos' victory over the Dolphins.  Shibasaki made his debut for the Bulldogs in 2018 but did not play consistently for any club until re-signing with the Broncos.  However, he impressed Michael Maguire in the 2025 pre-season.  Gehamat Shibasaki told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "I just put my head down and never stopped working."

The Brisbane Lions face the Geelong Cats at the Gabba on Saturday, with the team aiming for another win.  Brisbane Lions Football Manager Danny Daly told Peter Psalits on Wide World of Sports,  "Charlie could have almost played last week, to be fair, but we just felt we could give him another week off and get him 100% percent." "Kai Loman sort of dodged the bullet. Didn't look too good against Sydney. We thought he might have been out for a lengthy period of time, but, the young body of his, and his recovery was done at 100%." "So it's good to have both those boys back in our forward line," Mr Daly continued. 

The Queensland Reds have named Ryan Smith as captain for this weekend's game against the Western Force. Ryan Smith told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "It's a massive honour for me to be able to lead the team." "I'm trying to make sure I stay within my job and do the normal stuff that I do for the team." "It'll be nice to be allowed to talk to the referees a little bit more, but I'll try to hand that back as soon as I can to the other skippers when they jump back in," Smith continued.

Daly Cherry-Evans has announced he will not play for the Manly Sea Eagles beyond 2025.  He has not decided on his future, however, many clubs have been linked to the star half, including the Dolphins.  Dolphins Assistant Coach Ben Woolfe told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "I think you'd have to be looking at whether you could fit him in because he is such a quality player, a guy of his experience that has done as much as he has in the game." "I think that has to be coming up in conversations everywhere," Mr Woolfe continued.   

The infrastructure plans for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympic Games has been revealed.  The new stadium will be built in Victoria Park, a Brisbane Arena has been announced for Woolloongabba, and the Games will be the 'swan song' for the Gabba.  Peter Psaltis said on Wide World of Sports, "I think the time has come whether you agree with what was announced today or not, that we all band together now and get ready over the course of the next seven years for the biggest show in town to arrive on our doorstep."

The Gold Coast Titans have gained the first two points in their quest for the premiership, and the team wants to continue the success.  The Titans are focused on maintaining their momentum as they look ahead to the  Roosters this weekend. Moeaki Fotuaika told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "That's the challenge for us is backing up that performance on Saturday." "For us, as a team, we want to find consistency, and how we do that is preparing well during the week," Fotuaika continued.
